Maryland Film Festival 2000
Closing Night

Liev Schreiber and Tom Gilroy
chill out at the Closing Night Party. Tom directed Liev in Spring Forward
which was shot in sequence over the course of a year. The film is about the
relationship between two Parks Department employees, an ex-convict (Schreiber)
who is matched up to work with an old wise man near retirement played by Ned
Beatty. Liev begged his good friend Tom to cast him as Paul because he loved the
script and he thought it'd be a good acting challenge for him. It was indeed an
acting challenge, and he ended up hating jumping in and out of character over
the course of the year.

A couple of Liev's fans met up with him at the festival.

Spring Forward-review and comments
by Cami Lipman
This film is about the friendship that develops between two
men over the course of one year who work for the public park system in New
England. Paul (played by Liev
Schreiber) is an ex-con who is trying to change his life and at the same time
find his place in society. Murphy
(played by Ned Beatty) is facing a serious problem in his personal life and his
impending retirement. As this friendship develops over the course of a year the
changes of the seasons are used as the back drop for the story.
Q&A after the film:
Tom Gilroy answered some questions after the film.
He said that the film was shot in sequence over the course of
approximately three years and that initially he wasn’t going to cast Liev in
the part because he felt that Liev was to Urban for the character of Paul.
He also refused to answer the question of what the budget was for the
film because he feels that people become too obsessed with the money aspect of
making quality movies. He also said that his inspiration for the film was a
period of time that he spent with his father when his mother was in the hospital
and the conversations that him and his father had about various subjects.
Other Observations and comments:
After the film there was a reception and I met Tom, told him about this site and
I took his picture. What was so weird was that he thought that he knew me and we
had never met prior to this festival. He
did say the Liev was unable to attend because he got a job in Amsterdam and he
also made the comment that Liev would probably be directing soon.
