Liev Schreiber entered the public eye in
1994 with his role in Steve Martin's comedy "Mixed
Nuts". Outside the mainstream, he had already worked on
Broadway as Lionel in "The Summer House" as well as
narrating the series "Rock 'n' Roll" for PBS and
"Two Billion Hearts" (Brazil's official 1994 film of
the World Cup).
Liev has worked his way through the obscure and the "block-buster" to become a staple in the independent film scene (Party Girl, The Daytrippers, Walking and Talking) and subsequently, as a powerful supporting actor in various studio
productions like the upcoming Sum of All Fears and Kate
& Leopold. Born in San Francisco, 40-year-old Liev (pronounced "Lee-EV") grew up on the Lower East Side of New York City and received his formal training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts as well as at the Yale School of Drama.
His work speaks for itself. Make your own
judgment, but as for me...I'll just reserve the right to say that I have never seen another actor who can obscure his own personality so well. Each of his characters are so different from one another that you wonder if you are really ever seeing a glimpse of who Liev really is, though Liev will tell you that there is indeed a bit of himself in each character he has created.
Liev is very down to earth, enthusiastic, and accessible to his public. This disarming charm is just another reason his fans are so loyal to him and his work. Far from acting the role of "unobtainable star", Liev embodies that grounded perspective that lets people relate to him as a real person.
On the set of Twilight, Paul Newman said to
Liev, "If I ever feel like I'm doing something I've done before, I scrap it and start over again."
Liev's reaction to this bit of sage advice: "That really is the sign of a great actor,
I think -- to be able to constantly reinvent things so they'll be fresh for the audience as well as yourself."
